Dresden Files RPG -- Character Creation

Hi All,

Our group is just starting to get into a Dresden Files RPG (DFRPG) game -- 2 of us are also in the DFRPG game at HammerCon II.

First off -- I thoroughly enjoyed reading through both the RPG books and I've got to say they're the best books I've seen in a long while, both for content and the physical books themselves -- Way to go Evil Hat!

In creating our first PCs, we've noted a few things weren't very intuitive -- at least to us, who haven't used a Fate system before -- and so I thought I'd share our steps as we go through our set up and first few games, to help out other non-Fate/DFRPG gamers get into the game and avoid some of our mistakes.

A bit of background on our group, to aid in understanding us a bit : )
  • Some have read the Dresden novels, but the majority haven't.
  • We're long time roleplayers (many having between 20-30 years in the life)
  • I'm the GM for this game and have read the first book (Your Story) and am almost finished the second (Our World), some of the players have also read the books.
  • We use a Facebook group to keep connected and plan things out
So let's begin.

When A Dad Goes Bad 3

A 7 Hour Gaming Session Of AD&D

2nd Edition (Spikehelm Campaign World)

The Back Story: (aka the idea that became the setup for this game)

Continuing from the last episode of When A Dad Goes Bad 2.

We've moved ahead some 40 days to catch up with another PC.

Daniel was ahead of this game's timeline from his split off adventure with Maldis.

The setup for this game was that Daniel and Maldis had escaped from the army that had conscripted them (see here), however they lost track of each other during their flight and with two weeks of spring rains and floods, there was no way they could find each other and still escape recapture by the army.

Ritter and Cindus were caught in a flash flood and washed away.  Cindus found a cave to hole up in and Ritter managed to ride his horse to a copse of trees on a hill; both stayed put until the rains stopped.

During his escape, Daniel ran into trouble and completely wrecked his knee while searching for shelter, but luckily this is the same cave that Cindus is in.  Cindus fixes Daniel's knee while they wait out the rains.

Rading has been captured by Orcish Slavers along with the remaining survivors/slave from the village he was staying in -- some 20 women and children.

After the rains stop enough that it is safe to move again, Ritter, Daniel and Cindus regroup.

HammerCon II -- The Wrath of Con

Date: November 6, 2010
Location: Plaza Hotel, Hamilton Ontario

Excerpt from the Convention Program

If you came out for our inaugural year, thank you for kickstarting us! If this is your first time out, thank you for keeping us running! At the end of the day it's the gamer community that makes this convention happen. Without your support and efforts we wouldn't be here today.

HammerCon is back with a vengeance! We somehow survived our first run and this year we're even bigger and better!

We have a large number of game designers and authors in attendance – nearly triple the number from last year – but rather than tie them up in philosophical pontification, they’ll be busy showing off their games instead!

If you should find yourself with some downtime, make sure you check out our vendor and demo booths. In the hobby game store category we have Bayshore Hobbies, Conspiracy Comics and FunGamesCafe present, Big Iron Vault and Dungeon Crawler are here with their game products, Wraith Studios has brought their awesome handcrafted medieval clothes and gear, and local artists and authors Rise Comics join us with their new Ban: Sidekicked graphic novel.

There are also a bunch of demo teams present who would be more than happy to show what’s new and cool. Check out Steve Jackson Games’ Men In Black, the Catalyst Labs’ Battletech crew, the MIGS area, and the Ex illis and Malifaux miniature game demos, in addition to the Big Iron Vault and Dungeon Crawler booths where demos will be run all day.

Watch out for our many big events and tournaments, listed below:
  • Speed Gaming
  • Great Canadian Board Game Blitz
  • Call of Cthulhu Cup: Bad Rabbits roleplaying tournament
  • Magic: the Gathering tournament
  • Munchkin: Great Canadian Preliminaries
  • Warhammer 40K 2-versus-2 skirmish
  • HEAT (Hamilton Epic Armageddon Tournament) 2010
  • Vampire the Masquerade & Mage the Awakening LARPs
  • Late-late game of Ultimate Werewolf
But enough talk!

Go out there and play, and help us make HammerCon II: the wrath of con the ultimate celebration of gaming and gamers!
